One of the things that feels so clear at 39, and would have seemed utterly impossible at 25 or 35, is the firm knowing that I feel so much better now at nearly 40 than I did in my twenties and early thirties. In my body. In my heart. In my day-to-day, and when I'm on adventures like the one I just came back from, five days in the woods in on-and-off-again rain with a toddler and no galoshes until the 3rd day.
Audre Lorde, one of my great heroines, famously wrote, “Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare.”
When we give ourselves permission to break from our devices it frees up space in our minds, hearts, and psyches to create the things we wouldn't normally create and truly practice presence, a lost art form in these days.

Can you feel it? It's the dawn of a bright new year. Two nights ago, I lit a fire in our backyard, surrounded by friends drunk on champagne, hot buttered rums, or just love, and got ready to burn 2016. I mean I really burn it.
Tonight is the longest night of the year, making tomorrow (Thursday) the day that the light begins returning and the days get shorter. Incrementally, we'll notice our long days of sunshine and green growing things returning...
